Although not all therapists accept insurance, I personally choose to do so. At least half of my caseload at any given time will be filled by clients using health insurance, because I feel accessible and affordable mental healthcare should be available to those who need it. As I maintain a small client caseload, I am only credentialed with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) insurance.

If you have BCBS insurance, I am what is called an in-network provider. This means your insurance plan may cover a portion—or sometimes all—of the cost of our sessions, depending on your specific plan. I will bill BCBS directly, and you are responsible only for any copays, deductibles, or coinsurance amounts determined by your plan.

If you are not using insurance, or simply prefer to pay out of pocket, you are welcome to do so. Many clients choose private pay for greater privacy or flexibility in their care. The current fee for a standard 55-minute session is $250.

If you have insurance other than Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) that you would like to use, I would be considered what is called an “out-of-network” provider. You may still be able to use your out-of-network benefits. This means you pay me directly for sessions, and I provide you with documentation referred to as a superbill—a receipt with the necessary details for your insurance company. You can submit this to your insurer for possible reimbursement.

Every insurance plan is different, so I recommend calling your provider to ask:

- Do I have out-of-network benefits for mental health?

- What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed?

- Is there a deductible I need to meet first?

- How do I submit a superbill?

Let’s say Michael has a PPO insurance plan through his employer, but I am not in-network with his insurance company. He decides to begin therapy with me and pays the full session fee of $250 at each visit.

At the end of each session, I provide Michael with a superbill—a document that includes all the required information for him to request reimbursement from his insurance company. This includes:

- The date and length of our session

- The type of service provided

- The fee charged

- My license and provider information

- A diagnosis code, if applicable

Michael submits the superbill to his insurance provider. His plan reimburses 70% of the allowed amount for out-of-network mental health services. If the allowed amount (determined by his insurance plan) is $200, then his insurance reimburses $140 per session.

This means that while Michael initially pays $250 per session, he receives $140 back from his

insurance—making his effective out-of-pocket cost $110 per session. You would want to check with your specific insurance plan regarding the amount, if any, that they would reimburse for out-of-network services.

I accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. I can also accept Health Savings Account (HSA) plans.
